Accupril (Quinapril) is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Accupril (Quinapril) can be taken alone or in combination with a thiazide type of water pill such as HydroDIURIL. Accupril (Quinapril) is in a family of drugs known as "ACE inhibitors." Accupril (Quinapril) works by preventing a chemical in your blood called angiotensin I from converting into a more potent form that increases salt and water retention in your body. Accupril also enhances blood flow throughout your blood vessels. Along with other drugs, Accupril (Quinapril) is also prescribed in the treatment of congestive heart failure. You must take Accupril (Quinapril) regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Accupril (Quinapril); and you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Accupril (Quinapril) does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control.

You can take Accupril (Quinapril) with or without meals.

Alcohol may increase the effect of Accupril (Quinapril), and could cause dizziness or fainting. Avoid alcoholic beverages until you have checked with your doctor.

Take Accupril (Quinapril) exactly as prescribed, and see your doctor regularly to make sure the drug is working properly without unwanted side effects. Do not stop taking Accupril (Quinapril) without first consulting your doctor.

Accupril (Quinapril) can be stored at room temperature. Protect from light.

Accupril (Quinapril) side effects cannot be anticipated. If any Accupril (Quinapril) side effects develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Accupril (Quinapril).

You may need emergency treatment. You may feel light-headed, especially during the first few days of Accupril (Quinapril) therapy. If this occurs, notify your doctor. Vomiting, diarrhea, and heavy perspiration can all deplete your body fluid; and dehydration can cause your blood pressure to drop. If this leads to light-headedness or fainting, you should check with your doctor. Inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Accupril (Quinapril) before undergoing surgery or anesthesia. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without consulting your doctor. If you develop a sore throat, fever, or any other sign of infection, contact your doctor immediately. It could indicate a more serious illness. If you notice a yellow tinge to your skin and the whites of your eyes, stop taking Accupril (Quinapril) and notify your doctor immediately. This could be a sign of liver damage.

If Accupril (Quinapril) is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Accupril (Quinapril) with the following:

Diuretics such as Lasix
Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
Magnesium
Potassium-sparing diuretics such as Aldactone, Dyazide, and Moduretic
Potassium supplements such as Slow-K and K-Dur
Salt substitutes containing potassium
Tetracycline (Sumycin)

ACE inhibitors such as Accupril (Quinapril) have been shown to cause injury and even death to the unborn child when used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters. If you are pregnant, your doctor should discontinue Accupril (Quinapril) as soon as possible. If you plan to become pregnant, make sure your doctor knows you are taking Accupril (Quinapril). Accupril (Quinapril) appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If Accupril (Quinapril) is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment is finished.

For high blood pressure, the usual starting dose is 10 or 20 milligrams taken once a day. If you have any problems with your kidneys or if you are also taking a diuretic, your starting dose may be lower. For adults over age 65, the usual starting dose is 10 milligrams. Depending on how your blood pressure responds, your doctor may increase your dose up to a total of 80 milligrams a day taken once a day or divided into two doses.

For congestive heart failure, the usual starting dose is 5 milligrams taken twice a day. Your doctor may increase the dose from week to week, up to as much as 20 to 40 milligrams daily, divided into 2 equal doses. If you have kidney problems, the dosage will be lower.

Accupril

Accupril, a Drug consisting of Quinapril Hydrochloride compound, is an antihypertensive and is commonly used for controlling the Blood Pressure Level. Accupril/Quinapril is also known as ACE Inhibitor, where ACE is a group of medicines called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Accupril/Quinapril is manufactured by Parke-Davis and comes in the strength of 5mg, 10mg and 20 mg.

What are the major disorders for which Accupril/Quinapril may be Used?

Accupril/Quinapril is used for the treatment of following problems:

Accupril/Quinapril is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) : Each and every individual has a blood pressure. This blood pressure helps move the blood all around one’s body. The blood pressure of one’s body generally differs at different times of the day. The problem occurs when the amount of pressure rises from the normal, and if this increase stays for a longer time, it may be life threatening. This is called high blood pressure or hypertension. The normal blood pressure should be 90/140mg. There are number of drugs available to treat hypertension, and Accupril/Quinapril is one of them.

Accupril/Quinapril is also used for the treatment of congestive heart failure : Heart failure means that the heart muscle is weak and cannot pump blood strongly enough to supply all the blood needed throughout the body. Heart failure is not the same as heart attack and does not mean that the heart stops. Heart failure may start off with no symptoms, but as the condition progresses, patients may feel short of breath or may get tired easily after light physical activity such as walking. Accupril/Quinapril is also used to treat heart failure.

How Accupril works?

Accupril/Quinapril is used to lower high blood pressure (hypertension). There are usually no symptoms of hypertension. The only way of knowing that one has hypertension is to have the blood pressure checked on a regular basis by a Medical practitioner. If high blood pressure is not treated it can lead to serious health problems, including stroke, heart disease and kidney failure.

Accupril/Quinapril works by widening the blood vessels in one’s body that in turn reduces pressure in the vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body. Thus Accupril/Quinapril helps increase the supply of oxygen to the heart, so that whenever there is extra burden on the heart, e.g. exercising, tension, stress, etc. the heart may be able to cope better and thereby one will not feel short of breath as easily.

It can be said that Accupril/Quinapril is a successful medicine for the treatment of high blood pressure or heart failure.
