Casodex (bicalutamide) from Canada is an oral non-steroidal anti-androgen for prostate cancer. Casodex (Bicalutamide) is a man-made drug that is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Casodex (Bicalutamide) is a type of hormonal therapy. Hormonal therapies interfere with the production or action of particular hormones in the body. Hormones are substances produced naturally in the body. They act as chemical messengers and help to control the activity of cells and organs. Most prostate cancers need supplies of the male hormone testosterone to grow. This is produced by the testes and adrenal glands. On the surface of the prostate cancer cells are proteins called receptors. Casodex (Bicalutamide) has a structure similar to the male sex hormone testosterone. Casodex (Bicalutamide) works by blocking and preventing testosterone from attaching (binding) to the receptors on the surface of the prostate cancer cells. Without testosterone, the cancer cells either grow more slowly,or stop growing altogether. The cancer may shrink in size. Bicalutamide may be used on its own to treat prostate cancer that is contained within the prostate gland, or in the tissues around the prostate gland. In prostate cancer which has spread to other parts of the body, Casodex (Bicalutamide) may be given on its own or together with injections of another type of hormonal therapy drug such as goserelin, buserelin, triptorelin or leuprorelin. These drugs block the production of a hormone produced by the pituitary gland (leuteinising hormone), which stimulates the production of testosterone. While taking Casodex, some men may experience the following side effects:
*slight breast swelling and tenderness known as gynaecomastia.
*Hot flushes; these are usually mild and may wear off after a period of time. There are a number of ways to help reduce hot flushes and sweats. It can be useful to avoid or cut down on tea, coffee, nicotine and alcohol. Let your doctor know if hot flushes are causing you any problems as recent research suggests that progesterone or some anti-depressants may be helpful in controlling this side effect.
*Itching and dryness of the skin; this is usually mild. Let your doctor know if it is a problem for you. Sometimes creams or medications can reduce this effect.
*Nausea (feeling sick), vomiting and mild diarrhea These effects are usually mild and easily controlled. Nausea can sometimes be relieved by taking the tablet with food. Let your doctor know if you have any of these side effects as medicines can be prescribed to help.
*Lowering of libido (sex drive), and impotence (loss of ability to have an erection) If these effects occur, sexual function will return to normal after stopping the drug.
*Drowsiness and weakness Occasionally bicalutamide may cause feelings of weakness and drowsiness.
*Blood in the urine A rare side effect of Casodex (Bicalutamide) is blood in the urine (haematuria). Let your doctor know if you have this.
If your doctor decides to stop the treatment, return any remaining tablets to your local pharmacy or pharmacist. Do not flush them down the toilet or throw them away.

What are the major disorders for which asodex/bicalutamide may be Used?

Casodex/bicalutamide is very extensively used for the treatment of Prostate Cancer.

  • Cancer is an irregular growth of cells inside the body, and this growth generally goes to an uncontrollable limit. When a person is suffering from cancer, he/she, the cells grow in a very haphazard fashion, thus disturbing the normal functioning of the body.

  • Prostate Cancer is the cancer of a gland called Prostate in the male human body. This is a gland present only in males and is situated somewhere below the urinary bladder. This gland produces a kind of fluid that gives strength to the male sperm and grows in conjunction with the male hormones. Most of the times it happens that this kind of cancer develops at a very slow pace in the body and many a times doesn’t get even notified.

  • There are no specific reasons being identified uptill now for the cause of prostate cancer but the major reasons for developing this kind of cancer are age, race, nationality, diet, exercise, family history.

  • There are many stages of prostate cancer, and depending upon the stage of cancer in which the person is, the treatment may be given accordingly. Numbers of drugs are available in the market and Casodex/bicalutamide is one of them for the treatment of prostate cancer.

How Casodex works?

Since Casodex comes in the category of drugs called Hormones, so Casodex/bicalutamide works by stopping the production of the hormones in males that causes cancer. Prostate cancer cells grow with the help of testosterone, the male sex hormone, and with its help the cancer cells grow at an uncontrollable pace. This inturn means that this kind of cancer requires testosterone to grow.

Now, Casodex consists of a compound called Bicalutamide that is very similar to testosterone, and it works as a barrier between the cancer cell and the male hormone. Thereby the growth of cancer cells gets reduced and in some cases it even stops altogether.

Hence, Casodex/bicalutamide acts as a obstacle for the cancer cells and thus the cancer may get treated but only if the problem is recognized well in time. Because, if timely treatment is not given, the cancer cells may spread to any other body part and may damage other body organs also. However, Casodex/bicalutamide has been very successful in the treatment of this disease.
