Alkeran (Melphalan) is an alkylating agent used to treat certain types of cancer.
Before Using Alkeran (Melphalan): Use of Alkeran (Melphalan) may cause a decrease in the body's blood cells (bone marrow suppression). Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including current infection; bone marrow suppression; history of radiation, chemotherapy, or cytotoxic therapy; kidney problems; allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF Alkeran (Melphalan) IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have used Alkeran (Melphalan) before and your cancer did not respond, or if you currently have abnormally low platelet or white blood cell counts. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Alkeran (Melphalan). Follow the directions for using Alkeran (Melphalan) provided by your doctor. Take Alkeran (Melphalan) on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. WASH YOUR HANDS after taking Alkeran (Melphalan). Clean any areas (tables, counters) that might have come into contact with Alkeran (Melphalan). STORE Alkeran (Melphalan) in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container away from heat and light. Take Alkeran (Melphalan) regularly as directed by your doctor to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Alkeran (Melphalan) at the same time each day will help you to remember. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF Alkeran (Melphalan), contact your doctor immediately!!! SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using Alkeran (Melphalan) include hair loss, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; mouth sores; irregular or absent menstrual periods; lower back or side pain; weight loss; or any unusual lumps/masses. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience shortness of breath, swelling of feet or lower legs, stomach pain, black tarry stools, blood in urine or stools, unusual bleeding or easy bruising, fever, chills, persistent cough, sore throat, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, fast or irregular heartbeat, or unusual tiredness. SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION if an allergic reaction occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; rash; hives; itching; or dizziness. Do not take any more doses of Alkeran (Melphalan) unless your doctor tells you to do so. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. IT MAY TAKE MANY MONTHS for Alkeran (Melphalan) to completely work. Do not stop using Alkeran (Melphalan) without checking with your doctor. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use Alkeran (Melphalan) for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including platelet count, hemoglobin count, white blood cell count, and other blood counts may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. To prevent bleeding, avoid situations where bruising or injury may occur. Alkeran (Melphalan) MAY LOWER YOUR RESISTANCE TO INFECTION. Prevent infection by avoiding contact with people with colds or other infections. Do not touch your eyes or the inside of your nose unless you have thoroughly washed your hands first. Because Alkeran (Melphalan) may increase your risk of bleeding or infection, BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SUGERY, tell the doctor or dentist you are using Alkeran (Melphalan). IF NAUSEA, VOMITING, OR LOSS OF APPETITE OCCURS, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for ways to lessen these effects.
