Effects - How it works in the body

Cataflam belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Cataflam works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals, that are normally produced by the body in response to injury or certain diseases, some of which are known as prostaglandins. These prostaglandins would otherwise go on to cause swelling, pain and inflammation. By blocking prostaglandins, Cataflam relieves swelling, pain and inflammation. However, prostaglandins also play a role in protecting the stomach lining. They reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach, and increase bicarbonate and mucus secretion in the gut. This promotes protection of the lining of the gut and relief of symptoms due to excess acid in the gout. So, the reduction of prostaglandin levels by Cataflam may result in excess gut acid and may damage the gut lining (ulcers). Cataflam also contains misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin that serves to reduce the production of stomach acid, protect the stomach lining, and thus prevent ulcers.
