Rabies is a fatal infectious disease caused when the rabies virus invades the central nervous system. Throughout written history rabies has been documented as a source of dread due to its painfulness, mortality, and the circumstances under which it is acquired.
In humans, the earliest symptoms of rabies often include a general sense of illness or a vague, feverish illness. For this reason, diagnosis can be very difficult without a history of a bite. Even with a bite history, diagnosis if often problematic, because the incubation period is more variable than with any other disease. Symptoms generally appear 10 to 60 days after rabies virus exposure, but this timeframe can range from few days to over a year.
